HPLC Guard Columns & Guard Cartridges

An HPLC guard column is a short protective column or packed cartridge installed upstream of the analytical or preparative column. It traps particulates and strongly retained contaminants before they reach the main packed bed, helping preserve peak shape and column lifetime. Start with the internal diameter of your main LC column, then match stationary-phase chemistry as closely as practical. Next choose the guard format—direct-connect, cartridge + holder, rotary, PEEK, or preparative—based on dead-volume needs, pressure class and how often you replace cartridges. Share brand, model, ID × length and phase if you want a recommendation.

For most 4.0–4.6 mm analytical columns, use a compatible 4.6 mm guard cartridge with a matching holder (for example P3K0B-00280, P3K0B-00275, P3K0B-00099 or P3K0B-00075). Confirm connection style and cartridge format with your column hardware rather than assuming any 4.6 mm part will fit.

Yes, when practical. Matching C18 to C18, HILIC to HILIC, or SEC to SEC helps keep retention behavior consistent and reduces selectivity surprises. An inline filter mainly removes particulates from the flow path. A packed guard cartridge also retains strongly retained chemical contaminants in a bed that can match the analytical column chemistry. A correctly sized, clean guard adds limited extra backpressure. Extra tubing, mismatched ID, clogged frits or a fouled cartridge can raise pressure more noticeably. Monitor system pressure after installation and after each cartridge change, and replace the cartridge when pressure rise or peak distortion appears.
